Our Mission

The West Hartford Human Rights Coalition (WH-HRC) is a new, volunteer run, community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to building a more just, welcoming, and inclusive community through human rights advocacy, community organizing, educational programming, and direct mutual aid.

We believe that human rights begin at the local level – in our own communities, across neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and shared spaces. Protecting human rights is not just reacting and responding when they are threatened. It requires building relationships, sharing knowledge and resources, supporting our neighbors, and creating opportunities for people to support each other and take action together.

Stronger Together

We understand that we are strongest when we work together. WH-HRC works in partnership with local nonprofits, community groups, advocates, and residents to strengthen existing efforts, connect people and resources, and respond to the needs of our community.

As a coalition, we believe meaningful and lasting change is built through collaboration. Rather than working in isolation, we seek to bring people and organizations together around shared goals while supporting the important work already happening on the ground.

Human Rights Are Local

Human rights are sometimes viewed as an abstract or global concept, but they are a constant experience in everyday life. Whether people have access to food and housing, whether they feel safe and welcome in their community, whether they are treated with dignity and respect, and whether they have the opportunity to participate fully in community life – those are all human rights.

At the WH-HRC, we believe that everyone deserves dignity, equity, belonging, and the opportunity to thrive. We work to make these values tangible here in West Hartford and our surrounding communities.
